Southside Desire didn't waste time following up their acclaimed 2012 debut Songs to Love and Die To. The soul/rock/R&B band's two songs act as their own split single of sorts. Marvel Devitt's careening "Casualty of Love" pushes the band further toward power-pop while maintaining the personal approach and elaborate vocal harmonies that fans expect. Second song "Better" is backup vocalist Gloria Iacono's first turn on lead vocals, bringing back the slow-burning soul the group has become known for. Their songs were recorded at Mike Wisti's Albatross Studio to big fat 2" tape, just like their debut album.

This EP marks the first official release by Black Diet. New soul music with an unironic love for the classics, they've grown into their influences via their honed and emphatic live performances. Kickoff track "You Did it to Yourself" shows off lead singer Jonathan Tolliver's elastic vocal range, from falsetto to rumble in the space of a single line. "Slow it Down" bounces giddily toward the runoff groove with Turner-esque backup vocals and grinding gospel organ. Bassist Garrison Grouse produced Black Diet's side in his home studio.
